Agile fundamentals: values and principles
- Origins and purpose of agility. The Agile Manifesto: 4 values and 12 principles. Differences from predictive approaches (waterfall). Benefits and misconceptions about agility.
Overview of agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban…)
- Overview of the main frameworks: Scrum, Kanban, and their combinations. When and why to choose each. Concepts of flow, work-in-progress limits and continuous improvement.
Scrum: roles, artefacts and events
- The three Scrum roles (Product Owner, Scrum Master, development team). The artefacts (product backlog, sprint backlog, increment). The events: sprint, planning, daily scrum, review, retrospective.
The product backlog and user stories
- Build and refine the product backlog. Write user stories (format and acceptance criteria, INVEST). Prioritise value (MoSCoW, value/effort). Slice and prepare items.
Estimation and sprint planning
- Estimation techniques (story points, planning poker). Team velocity and capacity. Plan a sprint and define the sprint goal. Manage scope and unexpected events.
Steering, measuring and continuous improvement
- Track progress (burndown, kanban board). Facilitate rituals and foster collaboration. Measure delivered value. Run a useful retrospective and embed continuous improvement.
