Microsoft 365 glossary

This Microsoft 365 glossary defines, in one sentence, the key terms from our courses: Teams, SharePoint, Exchange, Intune, security… Each definition stands on its own and, where relevant, points to the related course.

Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 brings together email, office apps, collaboration (Teams, SharePoint) and security in one cloud suite. See MS-102.

Exchange Online

Exchange Online is the Microsoft 365 email service (mail, calendars, contacts). See the MS-220 troubleshooting course.

SharePoint Online

SharePoint Online hosts the organisation’s collaborative sites, documents and intranets. See Master SharePoint.

OneDrive

OneDrive is each user’s personal cloud storage, synced across their devices.

Microsoft Teams

Teams is the Microsoft 365 collaboration platform (chat, meetings, calls, files). See Administer Teams.

Teams telephony

Teams telephony (Voice) turns Teams into a business phone system. See Teams Voice.

Outlook

Outlook is the email and calendar client connected to Exchange Online.

Entra ID (Azure AD)

Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) is the Microsoft 365 identity directory: accounts, groups and authentication.

Tenant

A tenant is the Microsoft 365 instance dedicated to one organisation, with its users and configuration.

Microsoft 365 licence

The licence defines the services and features a user is entitled to (E3, E5, Business…).

Intune (MDM)

Intune manages devices and apps remotely (configuration, security, compliance). See Intune & Security Copilot.

MFA

Multi-factor authentication adds a second proof of identity to secure access to M365 accounts.

DLP (data loss prevention)

DLP prevents sensitive information from leaking outside the organisation. See M365 Security.

SC-200 (security operations)

SC-200 trains the Microsoft security operations analyst (Defender, Sentinel). See SC-200.

Microsoft Purview

Purview brings together compliance, governance and data classification across Microsoft 365.

Copilot

Copilot is the AI assistant built into Microsoft 365 that helps write, summarise and analyse within the apps.

MS-102

MS-102 is the Microsoft 365 administrator certification (identities, services, security). See the MS-102 course.

Level 1 / Level 2 support

Level-1 support handles common incidents, level-2 the complex cases. See M365 advanced support.
