FAQ – Microsoft Teams Telephony Training
What is Microsoft Teams Phone?
Microsoft Teams Phone (formerly Phone System) turns Microsoft Teams into a full-featured cloud PBX, enabling users to make and receive PSTN calls directly from the Teams app on desktop, mobile, and certified hardware. It supports auto attendants, call queues, voicemail, call forwarding, and integration with on-premises telephony via Direct Routing or Operator Connect. MFE-IT trains administrators on deploying Teams telephony in mid-size and large enterprises.
How does Teams calling work?
Teams calling uses Microsoft’s cloud voice infrastructure to route calls through Calling Plans (Microsoft as carrier), Operator Connect (third-party carriers integrated with Microsoft), or Direct Routing (your own Session Border Controllers). Each model has different cost, control, and operational implications. The MFE-IT Microsoft Teams Telephony training compares all three with selection criteria for typical scenarios.
What is Direct Routing?
Direct Routing connects your existing telephony provider or PBX to Microsoft Teams Phone via Session Border Controllers (SBCs) certified by Microsoft. It gives you maximum carrier flexibility (keep existing contracts, multiple regions) at the cost of operating SBCs and managing SIP trunks yourself. Through MFE-IT’s hands-on approach, learners configure a Direct Routing scenario end to end during the training.
Is Teams Phone expensive?
Teams Phone licensing depends on the chosen model and add-ons: a Teams Phone Standard add-on per user plus Calling Plans (PSTN minutes) for fully cloud, or just the Phone Standard for Direct Routing where you bring your own carrier. Pricing varies by region. For most mid-size deployments, total cost is competitive with traditional PBX systems. Our MFE-IT training course on Teams Telephony includes a TCO comparison framework.
