Description of the training: Linux Shell Scripting & Automation Training Course
About the Linux Shell Scripting & Automation Training Course

This three-day training course teaches you to automate Unix/Linux system administration tasks using Shell (Bash) scripts. From the fundamentals of Shell programming through to advanced techniques, you will master control structures, file processing, regular expressions, filtering tools (sed, awk) and process management. Numerous practical cases drawn from real administration scenarios make this course immediately operational. Also discover our Getting Started with Linux/Unix training course, our Linux Administration training course, our Advanced Linux Administration training course, our Expert-Level Linux training course and our Linux Security training course.

Good to know
Good to Know

Access to a Linux environment is provided during the training course. The scripts developed during the workshops are given to participants. This training course includes numerous exercises (60% practice) for better learning. Sessions are guaranteed from a single registration (except in cases of force majeure). A preliminary interview is held with the participant and/or a company representative in order to properly take into account the participant’s profile (level, needs, professional context, challenges, etc.). Assessment: during the course, the trainer evaluates participants’ progress through quizzes, role-play scenarios and hands-on labs. Participants receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the training course. This training course is part of our IT Infrastructure training catalogue. FAQ
What is a shell script?
A shell script is an executable text file containing a sequence of commands interpreted by a Unix/Linux shell (Bash, Zsh, Dash, etc.). It lets you automate repetitive tasks: backups, deployments, system monitoring, file processing, lightweight ETL. MFE-IT trains you in modern Bash with hands-on workshops based on real-world cases.
What is the difference between Bash, sh, Zsh and Dash?
sh is the historic minimal POSIX shell. Bash (Bourne Again Shell) is the default shell on most Linux distributions and extends sh with arrays, advanced expansions and more. Zsh adds rich completion and plugins (Oh My Zsh). Dash is an ultra-fast POSIX shell used for /bin/sh on Debian/Ubuntu. The MFE-IT training course targets Bash with POSIX compatibility.
Which tools are used to write and debug shell scripts?
The essential tools: ShellCheck (a static linter that detects common bugs), set -euo pipefail (strict mode), bash -x for trace mode, shfmt for formatting, and editors such as VS Code with a Bash extension. We also cover cron, systemd timers and Ansible for larger-scale orchestration.
How long does it take to learn shell scripting?
The MFE-IT training course lasts 3 days (21 hours), in a 100% tailor-made format with a maximum of 3 participants per session. It covers the fundamentals (variables, conditions, loops), functions, error handling, regular expressions, automation with cron/systemd and security best practices. 30 days of post-training support to help with your first scripts in production.
Is this Linux Shell Scripting training course eligible for CPF or OPCO funding?
No. MFE-IT does not directly handle CPF or OPCO applications and our organisation is not Qualiopi-certified. This training course is therefore intended solely for companies that fund it directly. This is a deliberate choice: we have prioritised teaching agility and investment in real quality over administrative compliance. In return, you benefit from a 100% tailor-made format: preliminary interview, content adapted to your business context, sessions guaranteed from a single registration (except in cases of force majeure), a maximum of 3 participants per session and 30 days of post-training email support.
